Ulcerative colitis in inflammation of large bowel. If it becomes noresponsive to medical management or when complicatins develop like perforation, bleeding, toxic megacolon, one may need surgery. The best option is total proctocolectomy (removal of large colon and rectum) with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis or ileostomy.
